Invest in Your Community...

Creating Magic Every Day at the Y!

We believe the YMCA exists to strengthen the community around us.
By providing access FOR ALL to invest in our kids, our health, and our community, we are causing a positive change in our community every day. We strive never to turn anyone away from the Y due to an inability to pay.

Through the Y Partners Annual Support Campaign, individuals and businesses in the community partner with the Y to make sure the Y is accessible to anyone. This year, the South Suburban YMCA's goal is to raise $108,000 to invest in our community.

Summer Food Program

Summer at the South Suburban YMCA means day camp, swim lessons and a summer food program.

This year, day camp participants received a free, healthy lunch each weekday at the South Suburban Y, provided by the Des Moines Public Schools in conjunction with a grant from the Walmart Foundation.

“The kids really liked the lunches and the parents appreciated the program,” said Colby Lindsey, who coordinated the South Suburban Y lunch program. “I’ve been around kids who didn’t know when they
would have a solid meal, so this is an important program.”

Lindsey said that the program fed not only students from South Suburban Y day camps, but also eligible children from the Boys and Girls Club and the surrounding neighborhoods. The 90-minute lunch hour let the children “stay and play,” and families were encouraged to enjoy the Y’s facilities.

The South Suburban Y was also visited weekly by the Food Corps Service, which distributed fresh Iowa produce in an effort to reduce the trend toward childhood obesity. Each week a new vegetable or fruit was introduced to the children.
